Diabetic Eye Exams

Minimize the Risks

Individuals with diabetes are more likely to develop a variety of further complications due to this disease. These can include a variety of eye issues and diseases that can lead to permanent vision loss, which may not be readily detected until problems have already begun to occur.

Your optometrist can identify the early stages of these problems – we can even detect diabetes itself, often before it is diagnosed. Don’t wait until it is too late; see your optometrist to have your eyes examined regularly.

Diabetic Retinopathy & Diabetic Macular Edema

Diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema (commonly referred to as DME) are two eye diseases that can result as a complication of diabetes. The latter (DME) affects the central vision and is the result of diabetic retinopathy, which is the most common cause of vision loss in individuals with diabetes.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a leading cause of vision loss and blindness in adults all over the world. Your risk of developing glaucoma increases significantly if you are diabetic. Glaucoma cannot be detected in its early stages without the care of an eye professional – most people do not realize they have glaucoma until they have begun to lose their peripheral vision.

How Diabetic Eye Exams Help

If you are diabetic, undergoing a comprehensive eye exam at least once a year gives your optometrist the most accurate insight into how your eyesight and eye health may be changing.

While vision loss due to eye disease is almost always irreversible, your optometrist can help you slow down vision loss or even prevent it.
